2-3-22 Update for Future WMUD Sewer Treatment
At its Feb. 3, 2022 Board meeting, the West Madison Utility District (WMUD) Board was presented with two possible alternatives as set forth in the West Madison County Environmental Infrastructure Needs Analysis Report prepared by Waggoner Engineering at the request of Madison County Board of Supervisors. One alternative was for the purchase of additional land and construction of a new lagoon, with the same discharge location that currently exists, and closing the existing lagoon in accordance with State requirements. It was mentioned that this alternative would only suffice for about 10-15 years maximum until WMUD would be faced with another situation regarding needing additional sewage treatment facilities. A second alternative was presented that would enable West Madison Utility District's wastewater to be pumped to the Beattie's Bluff Wastewater Treatment Facility (owned by the Madison County Wastewater Authority). The Board voted for the second alternative, with the understanding that first the WMUD sewer system would need to be revamped to eliminate excess ground water and rain water so that WMUD would not be paying for treatment of the excess water; the existing lagoon will be abandoned and reclaimed in accordance with all State requirements; and WMUD's Operator and Engineer will be included in all aspects of the project as it relates to WMUD's sewer system.

2-20-24 Update re CDBG Grant for Sewer Rehab
Madison County, applying on behalf of West Madison Utility District (WMUD), was awarded grant funds via a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) administered by the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA). Madison County received notification of this award on February 20, 2024. The total project amount is $850,000.00 with 75% being CDBG funds and Madison County providing a 25% match. It is anticipated that construction will begin in the Summer/Fall of 2025 and be completed in Winter/Spring of 2026.
Work on this prooject will focus on investigating, rehabilitating, upgrading, and replacing certain sections of WMUD's sanitary-sewer system. Sanitary-sewer gravity lines will be replaced and upgraded on Compress Street. Sanitary-sewer gravity lines will be investigated, repaired, and rehabilitated in the general area extending from the intersection of Livingston Vernon Road and Kearney Park Road. As a result of this project, many of WMUD's customers will experience better, higher quality sanitary-sewer services. It is also anticipated that there will be a decease in sanitary-sewer overflows (SSO's) and subsequent impacts on the environment because of improvements made to WMUD's sanitary-sewer system via this project.
